The third space is the Everglades region of Florida, to where Janie’s third husband Tea Cake takes her so that they can make money as migrant farm workers. On the muck of Everglades, Janie finally realizes her self-value and constructs her identity as a black woman, since the space stands for a great stretch of “representational spaces” deconstructing white domination and male hegemony. Janie’s spatial conversions in a series of three spaces, which is out of the Logan’s big house, to the town of Eatonville where she keeps a store with Jody, and finally to the muck of the Everglades, not only show us the positive expansion for her living space, but also embodies her unremitting quest for self-identity. By depicting Janie’s process of spatial expansion, Hurston implicitly applauds a black woman’s awakening of feministic consciousness, as well as condemns the racial supremacy and gender inequality. In other words, the conversions of three geographical spaces in the novel, not only mean the shift of the story settings in the usual sense, but also highlight the interconnection between living space and political power. As a black woman, to expand her living space is to gain her female and racial power. The spatial extension actively conducted by Janie implies the variations in authoritarian relationships between whites and blacks, men and women, and meanwhile dynamically shows us the progression of a black woman’s journey to resist against racism and sexism.
