Journalists must adhere to a personal standard of integrity The essential act of journalism is gathering information. This is done by reporter. Key Concepts and Terms Journalists must pay attention to details- the exact spelling of someone’s name, the exact time that something happened, and so on. Every news reporters wants to cover the big, breaking story. Every reporter wants to be on the scene first, wants the world to hear or read the information he or she has gathered. It’s what reporters do. They make journalism. Reporters are the starting point of journalism. Without reporters, journalism could not be practiced. Reporters are special people with special jobs. They must know how to get information and how to talk with people. They must recognize news and the value of the information they have. They must know how to use the language, both orally and in written form. They must be able to work and produce quickly. They must, above all, have a commitment to the practice of journalism that allows them to devote all of their energies to their task. What Reports do News is not just information; it is information with certain qualities that lift it into the realm of news. Those qualities are impact, timeliness, prominence , proximity, conflict, the bizarre or unusual currency and so on--see Chapter 1. Each of these qualities about the information may make it newsworthy. Reporters learn to judge information on these and other criteria and decide if it is news.
