Chapter 14 Visual Journalists Vignette Imagine journalism without many words Picture: More cars are now sold in China than in America Earlier this year, as the American government was buying 61% of General Motors and 8% of Chrysler to prevent them from collapsing, the two manufacturers’ sales in China were rocketing. GM’s sales in China in August more than doubled on a year earlier. For 2009 as a whole the company predicted a 40% rise. Sales of all car brands in China in August were up by about 90%, helped by a cut in the purchase tax on smaller, more fuel-efficient cars. Which one is more clear? “ Careful reporting is behind every respectable graphic. Diagrams can’t be drawn unless the concepts or processes they illustrate are fully understood.” “ Visual journalists must craft together words that thread together concepts, pictures or trends. It is difficult work and usually means that a day’s worth of reporting is boiled down to a few well-chosen words.” Celeste Bernard (graphics editor of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer) Even words and figures arranged in a visual way allow readers to discern a great deal of information that would be ponderous or impossible if the same thing was in paragraph form. For instance, look at the following table. It shows what grade averages high school students reported having as they took their tests for three years: What are the facts that you can discern from it? ( What are reported averages went up during this ten-year period? Which ones went down?) What do you make of these figures? With just a few words arranged visually, you can learn a great deal.
