Chapter 15 Graphics Journalism What graphics are and how they should be used ? The answer begins with a knowledge of some of the basic principles of design. 1.Principles of Design Reading normally occurs from left to right and from top to bottom. Focus and contrast are particularly important design elements for the graphics journalist. The graphic should achieve a balance among its elements that invites the reader into the graphic and guides the reader through it. Graphics should have a unity that draws attention to the information they are presenting and away from their design. 2. Conventions of Graphics In modern times, the graphic forms that we are most familiar with have been developed over several centuries. The purpose of these conventions is to establish some understanding between the developer of the graphic and the reader on what the graphic represents. 2.3.1. Proportionality is easiest to achieve when there is only one dimension involved in the objects that must be proportional. 2.3.2. Whenever a third dimension is introduced or when objects are taken off a flat plane, we encounter both depth and perspective. . Depth means adding a side or two to the objects in a graph to make them appear as if they are coming off the page. Diminish the true proportionality of the objects in a graph. Make a graph more accurate, attention-getting and interesting. 3. The Good Graphic The relationship of the graphics journalist to the audience. A good journalist has a healthy respect for the audience. “Graphics must be simple; otherwise, people won’t read or understand them.” Is it right? 4. Types of Graphics How many kinds of graphics do you know? Most people think informational graphics are charts and graphs. An informational graphic is anything that is not clearly a headline, body copy, picture, picture, or cutline. 4.1.
