* * * * * * * * * * * * Company Logo LOGO Journalism: Who, What, When, Where, Why and How By James Glen Stovall Section 3/ Chapter 10 Writing News and Features Key Concepts and Terms The ability to use the language efficiently, effectively, and confidently is the mark of a good journalist. 1 Writing techniques and structures don’t lessen the creativity of writing process. 2 All journalistic writing should share 4 characteristics: accuracy, clarity, precision, and efficiency. 3 Precision: the ability to use the language. 4 Good journalistic writing uses the simplest words possible and a variety of sentence structure. 5 Key Concepts and Terms Attribution: giving credit to sources for their information. 6 Inverted pyramid: the major structure of news stories. 7 Lead: the first paragraph in a news story 8 Feature writing often centers around people and their interests rather than events, but many of the same writing conventions of news writing are also require for feature writing.. 9 One of the most effective ways of learning to write is to read good writing and to try to model your writing on what you have read. 10 Preparation Writing and reporting are the central tasks of the journalist. These are very different tasks, and inevitably some journalists are better reporters—gatherers of information—than writers. Reporting requires a person to talk with people in certain ways and to look for information intelligently and creatively. Writing requires the reporter to sift through that information and mold it into the appropriate form for the medium he or she is using. Having the proper information—all the relevant facts of a story, the proper identification for the people involved, the times and dates, accurate direct quotations, and so on—is vital to the writing process, but it is only the beginning. The ability to write well requires that the writer have a thorough knowledge and understanding of the subject. In addition, the writer mu
