Chapter 13 Editing and Headline Writing 1. Fundamental Principles of Journalism Accuracy Publication’s most valuable resource. No substitute exists for accuracy. Editor’s state of mind. While other papers, especially in New York, were trying to outdo one another in their sensationalism and outrageousness, the Times remained a calm, thoughtful voice that readers found they could count on. Editing Procedure Quotations and Attribution .Use the exact words of the speaker .Use direct quotations sparingly .Use direct quotations to supplement and clarify the information presented in the indirect quotes. 3. Headline Writing 3.1. Principles of Headline Writing Specificity Examples: Sex and drugs cause for combined efforts Governor waits to announce plan Chances for budget passage good Word Precision Example: Lovers’ quarrel named cause of murder-suicide 3.2. Guidelines Based on main idea Don’t use unrelated facts in a headline. Avoid repetition Avoid ambiguity, insinuation, and double meanings. If a story qualifies a statement, the headline should also.
