ABSTRACT The Roles of Interpreters: A Case Study on Pafilia’s Interpreting Practice Sun Hangping This dissertation is a report on the author ’s internship experience as an interpreter at Pafilia, an European real estate company. In this report, I write about various aspects of my interpreting job, such as interpreting preparation, coping with different interpreting scenarios, adapting to different requirements of the employer, challenges of different interpreting tasks and my strategies for above-mentioned difficulties. In performing my job as an interpreter, I managed to take advantage of the hands-on experience that I draw from this internship, and made a summary of the different roles of the interpreter in five different interpreting scenarios, i.e. telephone interpreting, exhibition interpreting, interpreting at promotion fairs, interpreting at training sessions and negotiation interpreting. By making this scenario-specific analysis, I attempt to argue that instead of being a conduit or a translation machine, an interpreter is supposed to play a more active role in facilitating conversations and communication. Specifically, an interpreter is expected to play dual role, namely, one who helps overcome language barriers and facilitates the communication at the same time. A good way to play the role as the facilitator is to imagine myself to be the same role as the speaker in different scenarios, either a salesman, businessman, presenter, trainer or negotiator. Only by doing so can the interpreter handle different challenges, observe business etiquette, facilitate communication and avoid potential conflict. Keywor
