AbstractThe Abstract The novel Nostromo has been acclaimed as the polish-born English writer Joseph Conrad’S masterpiece and crowning achievement forits broad background，multiple characters，unique structure，and effective depiction of human nature．Critics have studied Nostromo from various aspects；howeveL most of them have just concentrated on the serious and tragic side of the novel and neglected its absurd or comical aspect．This thesis therefore tries another new interpretation of Nostromo with Bakhtin’S poetics of camivalization．By analysis of the camivalistic features in the novel，it probes into the very existing absurdity and comicality of the novel which embody the author’S carnivalistic sense of the world． The thesis consists of three parts．The first part is the introduction in which a literature review is given．And by examining the direct or indirect relationship between Bakhtin，Rabelais，and Conrad，it builds up a bridge between Bakhtin’S poetics of carnivalization and Nostromo．The second part is the body which is composed by three chapters．Chapter one focuses on the various kinds of figures that make up of the carnival collective，including the nondescript dilettante Martin Decoud，the disguised General Montero and the odd General Barrios as the harlequins， the superficial Captain Mitchell and idiot Sotillo as the fools，and big Gamacho Gamacho and small Sefior Fuentes，ugly Linda and beautiful Gisele as representatives of the paired images．Because of their typical characteristics，these carnival figures really provoke laughter and add comicality to the novel．In their special ways，these figures mocks all that is conventional，authorial，and sacred，which turns out quite subversive as well．Chapter two examines respectively the carnival rituals of crowning and decrowning of the significant figures like Charles Gould and Nostromo in the novel．It points out that crowning is not total approval， for it is accompanied by decrowning；decrowning is not complete negation，but
