The action of neutrophils (WHITE BLOOD CELLS) is just one example of how the body uses chemotaxis to respond to an infection. Aside from the cells that are already in position in the tissues (such as the fixed tissue macrophages and mast cells), neutrophils are the first responders to inflammation. Mitogenesis – the production of cell mitosis type of cell division – occurs when cells are needed at an injury site . Two new cells are prodcued Angiogenesis – development of new blood vessels – vital process in bone healing * CONFIDENTIAL * Firstly, you need cells that are able to transform themselves into bone. These are osteogenic. You need a scaffold. This is something inert into which the bone will be able to grow. You don’t grow bone into a void. Bone needs to be grown into something. You need differentiation and growth factors, which are able to say to the stem cells. ‘Guys you need to grow bone, you need to transform yourself into bone’. And, provided that you have a good blood supply, the final requirement for bone healing to take place is – good mechanical stability. When one of these factors is missing, there will be no bone healing. Lets look at what happens when the scaffold is missing. That is, there’s a bone void inside the body which has reached a critically sized defect of more than 5mm. This is not a rule of thumb but when the void has reached this size, we could say that the body won’t be able to heal by it
