The passive and unnacusative verbs are presumably incapable of assigning accusative case. However, in ROC they take two DPs without being ungrammatical. The present paper is trying to analyze the syntactic mechanism of ROC under MP framework. There is a lack of consensus concerning its syntactic mechanism. The analysis falls into several groups, namely ‘Possessor Raising’ (PR) Hypothesis, Light Verb Hypothesis, the Analysis of ROC as Appl. construction and the Analysis of ROC as Top. P. The focus of argument lies in the syntactic nature and its derivation of the preverbal DP such as Zhang San. Two main arguments are proposed in this thesis: 1, Chinese Retained Object Constructions (ROC) is base generated as Quasi Double Object Constructions (QDOC). 2, Chinese Retained Object Constructions is Foc. P in split CP. If DP Zhang San is topicalized, then the sentence is a Top.P. It is assumed that Chinese Retained Object Constructions is base generated as Quasi Double Object Constructions. Quasi Double Object Constructions are similar to Double Object Constructions in that it contains a functional category G, which enables the addition of an argument. G permits the theta-role of the added argument. At the same time, the value of G determines the theta role of Indirect Object. If the value of G is positive (G+), then the theta role of Indirect Object is GOAL. In Chinese, G can be either spelled out or not.
