School of Inf o rm at ion Engineering , J ingdezhen Ceramic Institute , J ingdez hen 333403 , China) Abstract : A planar cubic C2BKicr spiral with mo no tone curvature of constant sign was constructed to meet the require me nt of highway design 5 and then the transition curves between st raight lines and/or ci rc ulai arcs were de rived in detail. As it is done with clothoids in engi neeri ng, a single spiral is used for straigh line to circular arc , two spirals suiting C2shapcd or S2shapcd transition for circular arc to circular arc、twc spirals for straight line to st raight line , a nd a single spiral for circular to ci rcular arc when the latter is con： tained within the fo r mer. The con Crete exp ressions for the first four cases were given. In the fifth case the solution cannot always be obtained ? Because straight line segments and circular arcs can be rep resented precisely by C2Beier curves , the issues such as highway design can be handled in the system by C2Beier model, avoiding the difficult situatio n for co mp uter2aided de sign system to use the clothoids defi ned in terms of the Fresnel integral.
