GUCAS English Depart. Hu Jiangbo Traffic jam is now a major problem in most cities. However, it seems that people are not prepared to give up their cars and use other forms of transport. Discuss the reasons for the situation and suggest how it might be improved or resolved. With the substantial development of social economy and the improvement of people’s living standard, the number of private cars has been increasing dramatically. However, the problem of traffic jam in many cities is disregarded while people enjoy the convenience of the cars. (With the increasingly rapid economy, more problems are brought to our attention. Traffic jam is one of these problems, which in many cities is disregarded while people enjoy the convenience of the cars.) The problem of traffic jam in cities can be shown in the following aspects. First of all, people are often delayed one or two hours by the traffic jam, and a lot of time has to be wasted on the city roads. What’s more, the large quantity of harmful gas produced during the traffic jams damages the city environment seriously and has negative influence on people’s health. Even so, people are not likely to give up their cars and use other forms of transport. The reason is not only that the cars enable people fully enjoy the freedom of life, and go anywhere they want to go, but also that the cars symbolize the wealth and status of the owners. Based on what has been discussed so far，it follows that some solutions should be found to put an end to the problem of traffic jam in many cities. To begin with, public transport should be improved in order to provide citizens with better services so that they are willing to use their cars less frequently. Another way is to introduce relevant policies and laws to restrict car use, such as time restrictions, road limitations and the raising of oil price etc. Only through these ways can we get out of this dilemma effectively and successfully.
