Unit 16Intercultural Business Communication Never take anything for granted when you’re doing business in a foreign country. All that are considered valid in one place can trip you up elsewhere if you fail to consider that customs can vary. Business people can be blundered by overlooking some simple but important cultural differences. By bridging these differences, you can successfully achieve intercultural communication. Understanding intercultural communication will contribute to a positive communication climate. Warm-up Read dialogues either by yourself or with a partner. Note down the key phrases and expressions. Practice reading the useful patterns and expressions. Warm-up Build up dialogues with your partner based on the following situations. Situation 1: You are at a bank and talk to the bank clerk about opening a bank account. You tell him/her what account you’d like to open and ask for necessary information about how to apply for it. Warm-up Situation 2:You are at a bank and talk to the bank clerk about applying for a credit card. You ask him/her how to apply for it, how to use it correctly and the difference between a credit card and an ATM card. Can you identify some core Chinese values? How do you understand the so-called “American Dream”? How do Americans achieve this dream? Read and Talk Learn to Communicate Across Cultures Read aloud the article. Summarize the main ideas. Note down the key phrases and expressions. How to improve the intercultural communication skills?
