An Introduction to Dante by Li Xiaoman Brief Introduction Dante Alighieri, simply?referred to as?Dante, was a major Italian poet of the?Middle Ages. His?Divine Comedy,?is widely considered the greatest literary work composed in the Italian language?and a masterpiece of world?literature. In Italy he is known as “the Supreme Poet”. He is also called the Father of the Italian language. Dante Alighieri was born in a declining ?aristocracy family?of Florence , Italy. The exact date of birth is generally believed to be around 1265.In his poetry, he claimed he was born under the sign of Gemini , which can be deduced as May or June. When he was five , his mother died. And his father married with another woman, and had two younger sons, a younger daughter. Dante got married at the age of 20.He had six children ,but only four of them kept alive , including three boys and one girl. Dante was of noble ancestry, and his life was shaped by the conflict between the Guelphs and Ghibellines. When an opposing political faction within the Guelphs gained ascendancy, he was exiled (1302) from Florence, to which he never returned. His life was given direction by his spiritual love for Beatrice Portinari (1290), to whom he dedicated most of his poetry. His great friendship with Guido Cavalcanti shaped his later career as well. La Vita Nuova celebrates Beatrice in verse. In his difficult years of exile, he wrote the verse collection The Banquet (с 1304–07); De vulgari eloquentia (1304–07; Concerning Vernacular Eloquence), the first theoretical discussion of the Italian literary language; and On Monarchy (1313?), a major Latin treatise on medieval political philosophy.
