How can we guess the meanings of words?

Teaching aims:
To improve the students’ ability of guessing the meanings of words in the context;
Guide the students to summarize word-guessing strategies.
Important points:
Focus on different word-guessing strategies.
Difficult points:
How to classify the strategies of guessing the meanings of words.
Teaching methods:
Task-based method, communicative teaching method and situational teaching method
Teaching aids:
Multi-media , blackboard and paper
Emotional aims:
Reading makes a full man.
Have the courage to be the first one to eat a crab;
Be punctual.
It is very important to protect the environment.
Teaching procedures:
Step 1: Duty report
A speech about the importance of reading.
Step 2. Lead-in
Show students different question forms in the high school entrance examination.
Play a guessing game: Give students a word and ask them to guess it.
Step 3. Presentation
Strategies of guessing the meanings of words.
1. Give an example and tell students the strategy used. (Tip 1)
2. Group work
Guess the meanings of words and discuss the different strategies in groups. (Tip 2 — Tip 7)
Ask students to present their answers in front of the class.
3. Show students the last strategy. Ask them to make as many new words as possible by adding prefixes and suffixes. (Tip 8)
Strategies: Definition, synonym and antonym, cause and effect, contrast and transition, coordination, example, common sense and experience
Step 4. Practice
Timed reading.
Give students three minutes to guess the meanings of the underlined words in seven sentences.
Step 5. Competition
Guess the meanings of the words in sentences.
Have a competition. Divide students into groups to guess the meanings of words as quickly as possible. The group that guesses the most words correctly will win.
Step 6. Practice
Guess the meanings of the words in passages in the high school entrance examinations in Changsha from
