NOTES: Here are cross-sections of the skin. This is what young skin with a full, firm dermis looks like vs. an older, less firm, weaker dermis. The young skin has an abundance of collagen and elastin, the surface is smooth, and there is a ridged DEJ (important for communication between the skin’s layers). In the older skin, you can see that the collagen is fragmented and broken down, the surface of the skin is rougher and wrinkles form. The DEJ is less ridged which leads to a breakdown in communication between the epidermis and dermis. To rebuild the dermis we need to build new collagen and
