There have long been different definitions of the meaning of the American dream in academia. There is something in common, though different, that the American dream can be understood broadly and narrowly. Broadly speaking, the American dream refers to the national ideal of democracy, equality and freedom. In a narrow sense, it refers to a persons dream of success through self-struggle. The American dream is actually a dream. Forrest Gump reflected the chaotic society in 1960s in America from the perspective of man with physical disability and low IQ and it involves a number of historical events. From Gump, people can see the good personalities of kindliness, independence, diligence, honesty, loyalty and many other virtues that American are still advocating now, his independence and realistic attitude to life is the best interpretation of American cultural values--individualism. In different time, American Dream has different contents and performance. This article reflects the American dream from forrest gumps story and analyses the origin, development of the American Dream, the influence and positive significance to Americans.
