Better Cotton Overview What is the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI)? BCI, a global not-for-profit organisation, is the largest cotton sustainability programme in the world. It exists to make global cotton production better for the people who produce it, better for the environment it grows in and better for the sector’s future. In the 2016-17 cotton season, together with our partners we provided training on more sustainable agricultural practices to 1.6 million cotton farmers from 23 countries. Thanks to these efforts, Better Cotton now accounts for around 14% of global cotton production. Our aim is to transform cotton production worldwide by developing Better Cotton as a sustainable mainstream commodity, and by 2020, we hope to train 5 million farmers worldwide, and account for 30% of global cotton production. What is Better Cotton Platform (BCP)? The BCP is an online system owned by BCI, and used by ginners, traders, spinners, other textile supply chain actors, and retailers and brands to document their Better Cotton sourcing activities and sourcing volumes. The BCP enables suppliers and manufacturers to report to their customers how much Better Cotton lint was sourced through the sale of a physical product and allows BCI to verify the volumes of Better Cotton each BCI Retailer and Brand Member sources. As a result of this verification, retailers and brands can make credible claims about their Better Cotton uptake in their supply chains. What are Better Cotton Claim Units (BCCUs)? A BCCU is a BCI-specific unit that measures the volumes of Better Cotton sourced by supply chain actors and retailers and brands. One BCCU represents one kilogram of physical Better Cotton lint sourced from a ‘BCI gin’. Ginners are required to physically segregate Better Cotton from conventional cotton, as a result, they produce 100% physical Better Cotton bales. BCCUs
