It is clear that beyond arguments about future video compression performance, bandwidth requirements are increasing by an order of magnitude. Rather than base their business models on being the fastest Internet provider, service providers have introduced bundled voice, video and data services in order to create sustainable customer loyalty and stabilize the top and bottom lines. However, providing a mix of services, like this, places different requirements on the network. Video, unlike voice and Internet, requires high bandwidth and extremely high quality. Voice, unlike video, doesn’t require much in the way of bandwidth and can suffer through minor network impairment. Unlike voice and video, it’s all about speed with Internet access. As seen in the Figure, the 29 Mbps per user provided by EPON can accommodate some SDTV channels, high speed internet and one HDTV channels. The combination of concurrent HDTV channels and high speed internet drives EPON to its limits. With two HDTV channels, 12 Mbps per channel, only 5 Mbps remains for other services. GPON, with its 75 Mbps per user, has no problem with either concurrent HDTV or SDTV channels and the GPON capacity will be sufficient for residential users in the foreseeable future.
