Twelfth Night Content Dramatic personae background Introduction Type: Romantic Comedy (浪漫喜剧) Time: 16th Century (十六世纪) Locale: Illyria (伊利里亚) Witten: around 1601 Background Illyria, the setting of Twelfth Night, is important to the plays romantic atmosphere. It is an ancient region on the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea covering parts of modern Croatia, Montenegro and Albania, but, in the context of allegory, is thought to be an imaginary place. Illyria is mentioned in one of the source plays for Twelfth Night, Plautuss Menæchmi, as a place where, as in Twelfth Night, a twin went looking for his brother. Shakespeare himself mentioned it previously, in Henry VI, Part II, noting its reputation for pirates. Introduction Sebastian and Viola are twins. They are separated.because of a shipwreck by the coast of Illyria. They both think the other one are drowned. Disguised as a young man, Viola becomes a servant to the Duke（公爵） Orsino. Her duty is to win the love of the beautiful but cold Countess Olivia for the Duke. However, Viola is secretly in love with Orsino herself, resulting in confused loyalties and mistaken identities. Olivia, believing Viola to be a man, falls in love with this handsome and eloquent messenger. When Sebastian arrives on the scene, confusion ensues. Mistaking him for Viola, Olivia asks him to marry her, and they are secretly betrothed, with a promise to be married when the time is right. Finally, when the twins appear in the presence of both Olivia and the Duke, there is more wonder and awe at their similarity, at which point Viola reveals she is really a female and that Sebastian is her lost twin brother. The play ends in a declaration of marriage between the Duke and Viola, Toby and Maria, and Olivia and Sebastian, though the marriages do not take place during the play.
