Verbal Communication Hi! There. Welcome back to our course. I’m Han Yang. In this chapter, we will talk about another important component in intercultural communication, which is widely and mainly used in everyday exchanges-- Verbal Communication.Verbal communication is one of the major communication types. We rely on verbal communication to exchange messages with one another and develop as individuals in our daily life. To help you better understand the theories and practice of verbal communication, we’ll focus on: 1. Significance of Verbal Communication; 2. Language and Culture; 3. Different Verbal Communication Styles;4.LanguageDiversity; 5.1SignificanceofVerbal Communication Let’s first discuss the significance of verbal communication. Verbal means “consisting of words.” Therefore, verbal codes refer to spoken or written language. A verbal code comprises a set of rules governing the use ofwordsin creating amessage, along with thewordsthemselves.We acquire or learn therules and contents of our native language aswe grow up; thus, we can express our thoughts, emotions, and needs easily in our first language. The study of language begins with identifying its components and how they are put together. Now let’s look at the four interrelatedcomponents. They are:phonology (音韵),morphology (词法),semantics (语 义)and syntactics (句法). Phonology explores how sounds are organized in a language. The smallest sound unit of a language is called a phoneme. The phonological rules of a language determine how sounds are combined to form words. For example,thephonemes [s]and [i:]canbeusedtoformtheword ‘see’ [si:] in English. Mastery of a language requires the speaker to be able to identify and pronounce different sounds accurately. This may prove difficult for second language speakers, particularly those whose native languagedoesnothavea similar sound systemtothenew language. Morphology refers to the combination of basic units
