Verbal means “consisting of words.” Therefore, verbal codes refer to spoken or written language. A verbal code comprises a set of rules governing the use ofwordsin creating amessage, along with thewordsthemselves.We acquire or learn therules and contents of our native language aswe grow up; thus, we can express our thoughts, emotions, and needs easily in our first language. The study of language begins with identifying its components and how they are put together. Now let’s look at the four interrelatedcomponents. They are:phonology （音韵）,morphology （词法）,semantics （语 义）and syntactics （句法）. Phonology explores how sounds are organized in a language. The smallest sound unit of a language is called a phoneme. The phonological rules of a language determine how sounds are combined to form words. For example,thephonemes [s]and [i:]canbeusedtoformtheword ‘see’ [si:] in English. Mastery of a language requires the speaker to be able to identify and pronounce different sounds accurately.
