Releva nt desig n codes such as UIC-776-1R usually defi ne a uniform infin ite surcharge on the surface of emba nkme nt in order to evaluate the lateral live-load-i nduced pressure on the bridge abutme nts. This simplified method does not con sider the actual patter n of operati onal live load and its in duced pressure distributi on on the width and height of the wall. In the curre nt study, the operati onal railway live load patter n LM71, proposed by UIC-776-1R, was applied to accurately calculate the lateral-i nduced pressure on the abutme nt. I n this regard, the elasticity-based equati ons of the lateral-in duced pressure caused by recta ngular area and strip loads were utilized to evaluate the lateral pressure distributi on on the abutme nt due to the railway live load. For evaluati ng the resulta nt lateral force and mome nt on the wall, a nu merical in tegratio n was con ducted on the lateral pressure values in the width and height of the wall. Since the lateral-in duced pressure is related to the Poiss ons ratio, a sen sitivity an alysis was done on this parameter in order to show its effect on the resulta nt lateral force on the wall. As an applicable result, it was show n that, in the case of Poiss ons ratio equal to 0.3, the in duced resulta nt horiz on tal forces on the walls with the heights of 1.5 to 7 m, which are evaluated using the uniform surcharge of UIC, are con siderably un derestimated compared with the values obta i
