Reinforcement is primarily the enhancement of strength and strength-related properties, including resistance to abrasive wear, and it is especially important for rubbers that are inherently weak through their inability to strain-crystallize[1]. Reinforcement is accompanied by stiffening or increase in modulus. A gum (ie. unfilled) vulcanizate for most types of rubber has a hardness normally no higher than 40 Shore A or IRHD units, equivalent to a Youngs modulus of about 1.5 MPa, whereas a tyre tread has a hardness in the order of 60 - 70 units and a rubber sole has a hardness around 80 units[2]. Many products such as mountings, gaskets and seals are available in a wide range of hardness levels. Many fillers aid rubber processing by reducing elastic recovery and by improving extrudability, sheeting and other operations. Other fillers confer special attributes to the rubber such as electrical conductivity, chemical resistance and flame retardance. Most fillers are particulate in nature, with reinforcing types having particle sizes as small as 20nm. Fibrous fillers are also available with the advantage that stiffness can be enhanced in one direction relative to the other. Reinforcing resins (eg based on phenol-formaldehyde) are also used for r
