Boardworks Ltd 2015 Boardworks A-Level Physics Year 1 and AS Momentum and Collisions Teacher notes collision – A situation in which two or more objects move towards each other and hit each other. Momentum is conserved in a collision. completely inelastic collision – A collision in which the bodies stick together or coalesce on impact. The velocity of the resulting larger body can be found using the principle of conservation of linear momentum. elastic collision – A collision in which kinetic energy is conserved. explosion – A situation in which two or more objects initially together and at rest fly apart, for example the firing of a gun or a cannon. Momentum is conserved in an explosion. impulse – The product of force and time, which is equal to the change in momentum. Impulse = FΔt = change in momentum. Impulse is a vector quantity with units of N s. inelastic collision – A collision in which kinetic energy is not conserved. Some is converted into other forms of energy such as heat and sound. kinetic energy (Ek) – The energy of an object due to its velocity. Calculated from the equation Ek = ?mv2, where m is the object’s mass and v is the object’s velocity. momentum (p) – A property of objects with mass and velocity defined by p = mv where m is the mass and v is the velocity of the object. Momentum is a vector quantity and its units are kg m s–1 or N s. Newtons cradle – A device consisting of a series of metal balls suspended from a frame, just touching one another at rest. This can be used to demonstrate the principle of conservation of linear momentum as when one ball is swung out and released, it hits the others so that
