Abstract
Films are essential in modem world as an important channel for information and entertainment. As we all know, as a new object in translation field, recent years have seen a growing demand for subtitle translation in China. Watching foreign films also is a fabulous way of exchanging and munication among various cultures. Thus, subtitle translation is significant for foreign viewers to have a better understanding of the culture reflected in the movie. However, because of the constraints such as time and space constraints, and the cultural-specific expressions and cultural vacancy, subtitle translation bees quite difficult and plicated. To deal with the relationship of source language and target language in subtitle translation, translator has to choose between the two basic translation strategies, namely, domestication and foreignization, This is a rosy topic and also a hard time for translators. This Paper tries to solve the problem with the facilitation of skopostheorie and explore how to deal with their relationship in film subtitle translation with a case study of Lost in Thailand. This thesis is all attempt to apply the functionalist theory to subtitling. By analyzing the specific skopos in the film Lost in Thailand, the author es to the conclusion that domestication and foreignizafion should be bined to fulfill the very skopos of the film.
