It is widely conceived that Chinese people have distinct ways to celebrate it in diverse regions of China. Are you intrigued to know what the ways might be? As is well-known, this festival is in honor of a prominent poet--Qu yuan who is so patriotic for his motherland that he committed suicide after failing to guard/shield his hometown from collapse by throwing himself into the river of Miluo. Hence, May 5th of Chinese lunar calendar is considered as a holiday to commemorate this tragic poet. In South China, Dagon-boat festival is celebrated in the way of holding the boat racing competition and eating zongzi. In North China, we often light up some fragrant plant to expel the evil spirits and diseases in Chinese tradition. As for kids, they wear colorful strings on wrists and adults also drink some home-made liquor on this special day.
