I had seen her before she saw me. 3. He hadn’t learnt English before he came to England. （二）过去完成时的用法 1. 表示过去某一时间或动作之前已经发生或完成的动作，即：过去的过去； She had learned some English before she came to the company. Tom had already written four novels when he was 58 years old. 2. 在过去某一时间前已经开始并一直持续到那时的动作或状态，常与by the end of +过去时间、 by the time+从句、by+过去时间连用； By the end of last month, they had finished their work. By the time I got home, everyone had gone to bed. We had finished our work by nine o’clock yesterday. 3. 用在主句是过去时的宾语从句中； She said that she had not seen him for a long time. She found that she had left her luggage on the bus. He regretted that he had wasted a lot of time on playing computer games. 4. 表示过去本要做而实际没做的事情，常和hope, expect, intend, plan, want等表示愿望、打算一类的词连用； I had intended to come to the party, but I was busy. We had planned to go on a picnic yesterday, but it was raining. I had hoped to catch the 9:30 train, but it was gone. 5. 句式：It was the first time that sb had done sth. 这是第一次某人做某事。 She said that she had not seen him for a long time. She found that she had left her luggage on the bus. He regretted that he had wasted a lot of time on playing computer games. 6. 在hardly…when…和no sooner…than…特殊句式中，主句常用过去完成时。 He had hardly finished his job when the boss came in. =Hardly had he finished his job when the boss came in.
