UNIT 7 ENVIRONMENT AND ENERGY 研究生英语读写教程(基础级) TEXT A Renewable Energy Has More Economic Benefits Than You Know Contents Section I: Lead-in Activities Section II: Text Exploration Section III: Language Focus Section IV: Keys to Exercises Section I, Text A: LEAD-IN ACTIVITIES Background Discussion Preview-questions LEAD-IN ACTIVITIES — BACKGROUND What are fossil fuels? Decomposing plants and other organisms, buried beneath layers of sediment and rock, have taken millennia to become the carbon-rich deposits we now call fossil fuels. These non-renewable fuels, which include coal, oil, and natural gas, supply about 80 percent of the world’s energy. They provide electricity, heat, and transportation, while also feeding the processes that make a huge range of products, from steel to plastics. When fossil fuels are burned, they release carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, which in turn trap heat in our atmosphere, making them the primary contributors to global warming and climate change. /environment/energy/reference/fossil-fuels/ LEAD-IN ACTIVITIES — BACKGROUND /advantages-and-disadvantages-of-renewable-energy.php What is renewable energy? Renewable energy describes a collection of energy technologies, i.e., solar, wind, geothermal derived from sources that are never-ending and can be replenished time after time. Most countries across the world heavily depend on fossil fuels (oil, coal and natural gas) as sources of energy to power their economies. Renewable sources are renewable, sustainable, abundant and environmentally friendly. Unlike fossil fuels, they are not going to expire soon as they are constantly replenished. Renewable energy is considered clean energy since it doesn’t cause grave environmental pollution, and it has low or zero carbon and greenhouse emission. LEAD-IN ACTIVITIES — DISCUSSION Watch the video and discuss the following questions with your partners: 1. (1) What are the future of fossil fuels? (2) Do you think non-renewa
