PAGE 12 从《雨中的猫》看海明威的“冰山”原则 　　An Analysis on Hemingways Iceberg Theory in Cat in the Rain Abstract 　　Ernest Hemingway is an eminent American novelist in the 20th century, and Cat in the Rain is one of his representative short stories, which is about an American couple vacationing in Italy. Iceberg theory is a term used to describe Hemingway’s writing style and it is an important factor in studying his literary works. However, most studies in the field of Hemingway’s iceberg theory have only focused on some of his other masterpieces, and his short story Cat in the Rain is relatively ignored. The chief aim of the present work is to demonstrate how Hemingway’s iceberg theory is manifested in his short story Cat in the Rain. The tip of the iceberg, or in other words, the deceptively obviousness and simplicity of the story, and the seven-eighths of the iceberg, which includes the employment of symbols, the complicated relationships between the characters and the profound hidden themes will be discussed respectively.
