Background NotesConcept of ManagementDifferent views on definitionGallup OrganizationManagement Hierarchy Concept of ManagementManagement in business and organizations means to coordinate the efforts of people to accomplish goals and objectives using available resources efficiently and effectively. Management comprises planning, organizing, staffing, leading or directing, and controlling an organization or initiative to accomplish a goal. Resourcing encompasses the deployment and manipulation of human resources, financial resources, technological resources, and natural resources. Different views on definitionHenri Fayol (1841–1925) considers management consisting of six functions: forecasting, planning, organizing, commanding, coordinating and controlling Mary Parker Follett (1868–1933), defines management as the art of getting things done through people. She described management as philosophy. Peter Drucker (1909–2005) sees the basic task of a management as twofold: marketing and innovation. Redmond Malik (1944- ) defines management as the transformation of resources into utility. Gallup OrganizationGallup Organization (盖洛普公司)is a research-based, global performance-management consulting company. Founded by George Gallup in 1935, the company became famous for its public opinion polls, which were conducted in the United States and other countries. George Gallup wished to objectively determine the opinions held by the people. To ensure his independence and objectivity, Gallup resolved that he would undertake no polling that was paid for or sponsored in any way by special interest groups such as the Republican and Democratic parties.
