Practise using the new vocabulary and its different forms in context. 课前学习任务 Read for some background information Tibetan antelopes: Tibetan antelopes live on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau(青藏高原)at altitudes(海拔) between 4,000 and 5,500 metres above sea level and can run at speeds of up to 100 kilometres per hour.In the 1980s and 1990s, some 20,000 Tibetan antelopes(羚羊) were killed by smuggler(走私者)because a shawl(围巾,披肩)made from their hair could charge as much as $ 30,000. The number of the species dropped to less than 70,000. Therefore, the government has set up several nature reserves to protect them. Each year, Tibetan antelopes move to the northern area with a cooler climate and rich water and grass resources to lamb in June and July and return with their offspring in August, The Qinghai-Tibet Railway lies right in their path. In June, in order to let some 300,000 future mother antelopes pass without disturbance. The workers shut down their machines and pull down their sign boards and sign flags. They stop working for four days to make way for them. In August, when these Tibetan antelopes return with their children, they stop working once again. Moreover, the builders do their best to reduce noise in areas close to nature reserves. Thanks to effective protection efforts, there are now around 300,000 Tibetan antelopes in the Qinghai-Tibetan plateau area, and the population is steadily climbing.
