ASEAN was established in August 1967 and by 1999 its membership has grown to 10. In January 2003, the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area was officially launched. China became the first non-ASEAN country to join the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia. Relying on this platform of ASEAN, in recent years, the cooperation mechanisms between ASEAN, China and Japan, South Korea and ASEAN respectively with China, Japan and South Korea have become the main channels for East Asian economic cooperation. The goal of East Asian economic cooperation is to strive for a sound and mature framework. However, many problems still remain to be solved if East Asian economic integration continues to move forward until it is completed. How to handle the relations with the United States has a particularly crucial impact on the speed, direction, mode and even nature of the integration process, and even directly determines its success or failure. U.S. strategic concern in East Asia The United States is an extra-territorial state relative to East Asia, but it is the most important external factor that affects the process of economic integration in East Asia. As the United States sees East Asia as one of its global strategic centers, it does not want to see the East Asian countries integrate East Asia by any form of autonomous alliance that excludes the United States, even without any political aim.
