Chapter 11 Columns Mechanics of Materials11.5 Elastic and Inelastic Column Behavior Welcome to the course Mechanics of Materials. In this video we’re going to talk about Elastic and Inelastic Column Behavior. Pcr: the lowest critical loadElastic column behavior Columns with Eccentric Axial Loads The preceding sections described the behavior of columns when the material is stressed below the proportional limit. First an ideal column*1 subjected to a centrally applied load was considered, leading to the concept of a critical load Pcr*2. Then columns with eccentric axial loads*3 were analyzed. Elastic column behavior Diagram of average compressive stress P/A versus slenderness ratio L/r The results of these analyses were plotted on a diagram*1 of average compressive stress P/A versus the slenderness ratio L/r, as shown in the figure. The behavior of an ideal column is represented in this figure by Euler’s curve*2, and the behavior of columns with eccentric loads is represented bythe family of curves having various values of the eccentricity ratio ec/r*3. Now the discussion is extended to include inelastic buckling, that is, the buckling of columns when the proportional limit is exceeded. Inelastic column behavior ECDCritical slenderness ratio:Example:Secant formula:Critical stress: The behavior will be displayed on the same kind of diagram as before, as shown in this figure*1. Note that Euler’s curve is shown on this diagram as curve ECD*2. This curve is valid only in the region CD where the stress is below the proportional limit sigmapl of the material*3. Therefore, the part of Euler’s curve above the proportional limit is shown by a dashed line*4. The value of the slenderness ratio above which Euler’s curve is valid is obtained by setting the critical stress*5 equal to the proportional limit*6 and solving for the slenderness ratio. Thus, letting (L/r) critical represent the critical slenderness ratio gives the following formula*7. As an example*8, cons
