Products of inertiaThe product of inertia with respect to the x and y axes:Notes:(1) Products of inertia may be positive, negative, or zero;(2) The product of inertia of an area is zero with respect to any pair of axes in which at least one axis is an axis of symmetry of the area.?dA: a differential element of area;x and y: coordinates of dA;yxy-x Referring to the area shown in the figure, the product of inertia with respect to the x and y axes is defined as *the following integral, where *dA is the area of a differential element, x and y are coordinates of dA.From this definition, it can seen that each differential element of area dA is multiplied by the product of its coordinates. As a consequence, *products of inertia may be positive, negative, or zero. If the area lies entirely in the first or third quadrant of the axes, the product of inertia is positive because the product of coordinates x and y is positive for each dA. Similarly, areas entirely within the second or fourth quadrants have negative products of inertia.When the area is located in more than one quadrant, the sign of the product of inertia depends upon the distribution of the area.Here is a special case. Consider the area shown in this *Figure, which is symmetric about the y axis. For every element *dA having *coordinates x and y, there exists an equal and symmetrically located element *dA having the same *y coordinate but an *x coordinate of opposite sign. Therefore, the products xydA cancel each other, and the product of inertia of the entire area vanishes.
