InessencethisStandarddealswiththreeprimaryissues.Thefirstiswhere
“payment”isbytheissueofsharesorotherformsofinstrument.Thesecondiswhere
thereisacashpayment,buttheamountisderivedfromsharevaluesorachangein
sharevalues.Andthethirdiswheretheproviderofgoodsorservicestoanentityhas
achoiceaboutwhetherheorshegetspaidincashorshares.
Asapracticalmatter,themajoreffectofthisstandardisonremuneration.
Employeesmayreceivepartoftheirremunerationinrestrictedshares,share
appreciationrights,orviashareoptions.Inthecaseofrestrictedsharestheemployee
maynothavetopay“fairvalue”fortheshares.Schemesbasedonshareappreciation
involvetheemployee(eventually)receivingcashthatistiedtochangesinshare
prices.Inthecaseofshareoptions,thenormalarrangementisthatnomoneyis
exchangedwhentheoptionisgranted,andiftheoptionisexercisedthegrantee(i.e.,
theemployee)paystheexercisepriceforthenewsharesthatareissued.
Thisarticleconcentratesontheshareoptionaccounting,asshareoptionsarean
internationalandpervasiveformofremuneration,becauseshareoptionshavecomein
forsomecriticism,andoptionsinvolvetheuseofequityinstruments.Itisimportant
tonoteattheoutsetthatsomeshare-basedpaymentschemeswillinvolvethe
recognitionofaliability,ratherthantherecognitionofanitemthataffects“equity”.
