Abstract

Nephrolithiasisisconsideredasystemicdisease.Alinkhasbeenestablishedbetweennephrolithiasis,cardiovasculardisease

(CVD),themetabolicsyndromeandatherosclerosis.Asigniicantcorrelationhasbeenfoundbetweenthehighlevelsof

oxidizedlow-densitylipoprotein(oxLDL)andCVDandatherosclerosis,includingcoronaryandfemoralarterydisease.To

thebestofourknowledge,oxLDLhasnotbeenevaluatedinpatientswithnephrolithiasis.Thisstudyaimedtoevaluateserum

levelsofoxLDL,anti-oxLDLantibodies

(oxLDL-ab)andothermarkersofatherosclerosisinpatientswithnephrolithiasis,

accordingtotheseverityofthedisease.Thepopulationsampleconsistedof94patientsof30–70

yearsofagewithnosymp-

tomsofCVDwhopresentedwithrenalcalculidocumentedbyultrasonography,abdominalX-rayorcomputedtomography.

Thepatientsweredividedintotwogroups:Group1(≥3stones)andGroup2(1–2stones).Acomparisoncontrolgroup

wasformedwith21healthyindividuals.Enzyme-linkedimmunosorbentassayswereusedtoassessoxLDLandoxLDL-

ab.Lipidperoxidationindexeswerealsoanalyzed.MedianserumoxLDLvalueswerehigherinGroups1and2compared

tothecontrolgroup
