ABSTRACT
AgentsModelingAgents:TheDesignandAnalysisofMulti-LevelAgent-BasedModels

Agent-basedmodeling(ABM)playsacriticalroleincomplexsystemsresearchby
allowingresearcherstoexaminehowindividual-to-individualinteractionscollectively
giverisetogroup-levelandsystem-levelbehavior.However,fieldsrangingfromsocio-
environmentalsystemstotumorbiologytotrafficmodelinghaveincreasinglysoughtto
modelinteractionsbetweensystemsofdifferentscales.Multi-levelagent-basedmodeling
(ML-ABM)extendsclassicABMtechniquestomeetthisneed.Despitethisgrowing
demand,multi-levelmodelingtechniquesintroducesignificantcomplexityintothe
modelingprocessandhaveyettoseewidespreadadoptionamongABMpractitioners.
WeintroducedtheLevelSpaceextensionforthewidelyusedNetLogoABMplatformto
makeML-ABMeasilyaccessibletoABMresearchersbyleveragingNetLogo’score“low
floor,highceiling”approach.
