AsaresultofseveralmajorstudiesconductedbytheEnvironmentalProtectionAgency,thefederalgovernmenthasissuedregulationsmandatingagradualphaseoutoftetraethyllead(TEL)forgasolinesoldintheUnitedStates.SeparatelegislationdevelopedbythestateofCaliforniaprovidedevenstifferlimitsfortheTELcontentofgasoline.
ForyearsrefinershadusedTELasanadditiontogasolineasacheapandconvenientwaytoimprovetheoctaneratingofthegasoline,thusreducingthepotentialforharmtomotorvehicleengines.IntheabsenceofTEL,arefinerymustreprocesssomeofthelow-octanecomponentsofgasolinetoincreasetheiroctaneratings.Thiscanbeaccomplishedeitherbybreakingapartthehydrocarbonchains,throughprocessesknowninthetradeas“catcracking”or“hydrocracking,”orbyrearrangingthebondinginthechainsthroughprocessescalledreformingoralkylation.AllfourprocessesareverycostlyandefficientbutprovidemorevariabilityinresultsthanthesimpleadditionofTELtoimprovetheoctaneratingofablend.
FacedwiththedualimpactoffederalregulationsonTELandthemorestringentCalifornialimits,officialsatExxon’sBenicia,California,refineryinitiatedacrashprogramtodeterminethemostefficientmeansofaddressingthenewrequirements.ExperimentswereundertakenusingeachofthefourknownmethodsofincreasingoctaneratingswithoutexceedingmandatedlimitsontheuseofTEL.IntheirstudygasolinefromExxon’sBeniciarefinerywasreprocessedinawaysuchthatcostswereequalizedbyusingeachexperimentalprocedure.Thedatainthetableshowtheoctaneratingsresultingfromtheapplicationofthefourreprocessingprocedurestogasolinederivedfromeachofeightstoragetanks.
