practicebreathingeveryday,astheirvocalchordswouldbe
inadequatewithoutcontrolledmuscularsupport.Stringplayers
practicemovingthefingersofthelefthandupanddown,while
drawingthebowtoandfrowiththerightarm——twoentirely
differentmovements.
Singersandinstrumentalistshavetobeabletogetevery
noteperfectlyintune.Pianistsaresparedthisparticularanxiety,
forthenotesarealreadythere,waitingforthem,anditisthe
pianotunersresponsibilitytotunetheinstrumentforthem.But
theyhavetheirowndifficulties:thehammersthathitthestrings

thoroughlyathomeinthelanguageofmusicthattheycanenjoy
performingworkswritteninanycentury.
