Abstract

Thisstudyusesindividual-levelcensusdatafromArgen-tinatoexaminethesocioeconomicdisparitiesbetweenNativeandnon-Nativepeople.Nativepeoplefareworseacrossavarietyofindicators,includinghousing,education,employment,andhealth.Onaverage,theobserveddispar-itiesamountto12percentofthestandarddeviationandpersistevenaftercontrollingforfactorssuchasgeographiclocation.Furthermore,therearedifferencesintheintergen-erationaltransmissionofeducationbetweenNativesand

non-Natives:foreachlevelofeducationoftheparents,thechildrenofNativeshave,onaverage,feweryearsofeduca-tionthanthechildrenofnon-Natives.Finally,thestudyalsorevealslargedifferencesbetweenNativegroups:whilesomeachieveaverageoutcomesthatsurpassthoseofthenon-Na-tivepopulation,otherssignificantlylagbehind.Notably,thesedifferencesarecorrelatedwithacharacteristicoftheirpre-Columbianeconomy:thepracticeofagriculture.
