Wepresentasecond-orderfinite-differenceschemeforviscoelasticflowsbasedonarecentreformulationoftheconstitutivelawsas

equationsforthematrixlogarithmoftheconformationtensor.Wepresentasimpleanalysisthatclarifieshowthepassagetologarithmic

variablesremediesthehigh-Weissenbergnumericalinstability.Asastringenttest,wesimulateanOldroyd-Bfluidinalid-drivencavity.The

schemeisfoundtobestableatlargevaluesoftheWeissenbergnumber.TheseresultssupportourclaimthatthehighWeissenbergnumerical

instabilitymaybeovercomebytheuseoflogarithmicvariables.Remainingissuesareratherconcernedwithaccuracy,whichdegradeswith

insufficientresolution.
