TheDevelopmentalModelofInterculturalSensitivity(DMIS)wascreatedbyDr.MiltonBennett.

Thismodeldescribesthedifferentwaysinwhichpeoplereacttoculturaldifferences.Itconsistsof

sixdifferentstages.

ThefirststageoftheDMISisdenial.Peopleatthisstageoftenfailtoseeculturaldifferencesand

tendtoisolatethemselvesfromothergroups.Theyarenotinterestedinculturaldifferencesand

couldn’tcarelessaboutpeopleotherthantheonesthatareintheirowncultures.

DefenseisthesecondstageoftheDMIS.Duringthisstage,peopleoftenfeelasthoughtheirown

cultureistheonlygoodculture.Peopletendtobeverycriticalofotherculturesandhaveanarrow

focusonwhatbehaviorsandculturesareappropriate.

ThethirdstageoftheDMISisminimization.Duringthisstage,peopletendtobelievethatelements

oftheirownculturalworldviewareexperiencedasuniversal.Theyfocusoncommonalitiesacross

culturesthatcanmaskimportantculturaldifferencesinvalues,perceptionsandbehaviors.

AcceptanceisthefourthstageoftheDMIS.Duringthisstage,peopleareabletorecognizeand

appreciateculturaldifferencesinbothbehaviorsandvalues.Theystarttobelievethatone’sown

cultureisjustoneofthemanyculturesthatexistintheworld.Peopleatthisstageareoftencurious

aboutotherculturesandhaveadesiretolearn.

DuringthefifthstageoftheDMIS,adaptation,peoplebegintobemorecompetentinhowto

communicatewithpeopleofothercultures.Theyareabletoexpandtheirworldviewsto

accuratelyunderstandotherculturesandbehaveinavarietyofculturallyappropriateways.

IntegrationisthefinalstageoftheDMIS.Peopleatthisstagehaveadefinitionofidentitythatis

notprimarilybasedinanyoneculture,allowingthemtoshiftrathersmooth
