thantheydoisthattheyfailtograspthetruenatureoftheproblemoflearningtopronounce,

andconsequentlyneversetabouttacklingitintherightway.Fartoomanypeoplefailtorealize

thatpronouncingaforeignlanguageisaskill—onethatneedscarefultrainingofaspecialkind,

andonethatcannotbeacquiredbyjustleavingittotakecareofitself.Ithinkeventeachers

oflanguage,whilerecognizingtheimportanceofagoodaccent,tendtoneglect,intheir

practicalteaching,thebranchofstudyconcernedwithspeakingthelanguage.Sothefirstpoint

IwanttomakeisthatEnglishpronunciationmustbetaught;theteachershouldbepreparedto

devotesomeofthelessontimetothis,andshouldgetthestudenttofeelthathereisamatter

worthyofreceivinghiscloseattention.So,thereshouldbeoccasionswhenotheraspectsof

English,suchasgrammarorspelling,areallowedforthemomenttotakesecondplace.

Apartfromthisquestionofthetimegiventopronunciation,therearetwootherrequirements

fortheteacher:thefirst,knowledge;thesecond,technique.

Itisimportantthattheteachershouldbeinpossessionofthenecessaryinformation.Thiscan

generallybeobtainedfrombooks.Itispossibletogetfrombookssomeideaofthemechanics

ofspeech,andofwhatwecallgeneralphonetictheory.Itisalsopossibleinthiswaytoget

aclearmentalpictureoftherelationshipbetweenthesoundsofdifferentlanguages,between
