thatthefundamentalreasonwhypeopleingeneraldonotspeakforeignlanguagesverymuchbetter

thantheydoisthattheyfailtograspthetruenatureoftheproblemoflearningtopronounce，

andconsequentlyneversetabouttacklingitintherightway.Fartoomanypeoplefailtorealize

thatpronouncingaforeignlanguageisaskill—onethatneedscarefultrainingofaspecialkind，

andonethatcannotbeacquiredbyjustleavingittotakecareofitself.Ithinkeventeachers

oflanguage，whilerecognizingtheimportanceofagoodaccent，tendtoneglect，intheir

practicalteaching，thebranchofstudyconcernedwithspeakingthelanguage.Sothefirstpoint

IwanttomakeisthatEnglishpronunciationmustbetaught;theteachershouldbepreparedto

devotesomeofthelessontimetothis，andshouldgetthestudenttofeelthathereisamatter

worthyofreceivinghiscloseattention.So，thereshouldbeoccasionswhenotheraspectsof

English，suchasgrammarorspelling，areallowedforthemomenttotakesecondplace.

fortheteacher：thefirst，knowledge;thesecond，technique.

Itisimportantthattheteachershouldbeinpossessionofthenecessaryinformation.Thiscan
