ABSTRACT
ThetranslationofShakespeareanplayshasbeenattractingtheattentionof
scholarsathomeandabroad,butfewscholarshavepaidattentiontothetranslationof
theircross-culturaladaptations,letalonethetranslationofemotionmetaphorsinthem.
TheCantoneseoperascriptTianzhiJiaonv(DistinguishedLady)isadaptedfromThe
MerchantofVenicebytheprominentscriptwriterQinZhongying.Theemotion
metaphorsareprominentinthescriptandhaveastrongChineseculturalflavor.
CarefultranslationofthoseemotionmetaphorsfacilitatesEnglishreaderstobetter
understandthetextandgivesthemagoodreadingexperience.Therefore,thisreport
selectstheCantoneseoperascriptDistinguishedLadyasthesourcetext.
UndertheguidanceofConceptualMetaphorTheory,thisreportsummarizesthe
definitionofemotionmetaphor,discussesthepreconditionofmapping,andputs
forwardthreetranslationprinciplesofemotionmetaphorsinDistinguishedLady:(1)
IfemotionmetaphorsinChinesecanbepresentedinEnglishwithoutany
modificationandwon’tcauseconfusionormisunderstandingforEnglishreadersat
thesametime,theyshouldberenderedintoEnglishwordforword;(2)IfEnglish
readersareconfusedormisledbytheword-for-wordtranslationduetothedifferences
inthecustomaryexpressionsbetweenChineseandEnglish,thetranslatoroughtto
transformthesourcedomainoftheemotionmetaphorintothesourcedomainusedto
expressthesameemotioninEnglish;(3)IftheemotionmetaphorsinChinesecan’tbe
reproducedinEnglishintheformofmetaphor,orifthemetaphorsarenotsatisfactory
aftertransformation,oriftheemotionmetaphorsareofstrongChineseculturalflavor,
thetranslatorshouldgiveupusingtheemotionmetaphorsinEnglishtorenderthem.
Theemotionsshouldbepresentedexplicitly.
