ABSTRACT

AssocialismwithChinesecharacteristicsenteredanewera,thesteady

developmentofthecountry’sglobalpoliticsandeconomystatuscallsfora

correspondinginternationalinfluence.ItisessentialforChinatopromoteitscultureto

goglobalandtranslationplaysavitalroleinthisprocess.GuangdongUniversityof

ForeignStudies(GDUFS)wasamongthefirsthighereducationinstitutionsinChinato

establishMTIprogramanditsSchoolofInterpretingandTranslationStudiesoffersa

sub-directioninmediatranslation(nowrenamedas‘translationandinternational

communication’),aimingtonurturehighly-skilledandprofessionaltranslatorsinmedia

translationfieldforthesociety.Overtheyears,theschoolhascultivatedalargenumber

ofhigh-levelworkforceandhasmaintainedarelativelyhighemploymentrate.

However,despitethishighrate,manygraduatesfromthemediatranslationdirection

ultimatelychoosenottopursuecareersrelatedtotheirfieldofstudy.Thisdisparity

betweenstudents’actualemploymentsituationsandtheintendededucationaloutcomes

highlightsagap.Extensiveresearcheshavebeenconductedontheemployment

situationofMTIgraduates,butthereisalackofsurveyspeciallyfocusingonmedia

translation.Byusingquestionnaire,contentanalysisandothermethods,thissurvey

seekstounderstandtheemploymentstatusofmediatranslationgraduatesfrom2019to

2023,explorethereasonsforthegap,andproposecorrespondingrecommendations.

Thisstudyaimstoprovideinsightsforrefiningteachingpracticesinacademic

institutionsandimprovinggraduates’employability.Thesurveyfindingsrevealthat

lessthan15%ofthesampledindividualsareengagedintranslation-relatedwork,with

lessthanaquarteroftheminvolvedinm
