ABSTRACT
Inconsecutiveinterpreting,theoccurrenceofmetaphoriscommon,inwhichthespeaker
conveystrueintentionsusingabstractconceptsratherthanliteralmeanings.Tosuccessfully
conveytheintentionofthespeakertotheaudience,theinterpretermustcomprehenditin
termsofbothrealityandcognition.Inconceptualmetaphor,metaphorisacognitivemode
andreasoningprocessthatviewsmetaphorasauniversalmethodofthinking,experiencing,
andunderstandingtheunknownviathefamiliar.Themappingprocess,inwhichthe“source
domain”mapstothe“targetdomain”,iscentraltoconceptualmetaphortheory.
BasedonLakoffandJohnsonsconceptualmetaphortheory,thisthesischoseaseminar
heldbyCSISonMay4,2023withthetheme“FutureDevelopmentofAlternativeProtein”
forEnglish-Chinesesimulatedconsecutiveinterpretingandanalyzedthemetaphorical
interpretingprocess.Thereportisdividedintofourparts.Thefirstsectionpresentsthe
simulatedinterpretingpracticeexercises,aswellasthereportspurposeandsignificance.The
secondstageispre-interpretingpreparation,whichincludescollectingparalleltext
informationandbuildingaglossary.Thethirdsectionfocusesonthetheoreticalfoundation,
namelythetheoreticalelaborationofconceptualmetaphortheory.Thefourthsectionpresents
adetailedcaseanalysis.Undertheguidanceofconceptualmetaphor,theauthorselectsthe
mostrepresentativeexamplesfromthetranscripttoanalyzethecognitiveprocessand
mappingmechanismofdealingwithmetaphorfromthreeperspectives:structuralmetaphor,
orientationalmetaphor,andontologicalmetaphor.Thereportconcludeswithasummary
chapterthatdiscussestheresults,insights,andshortcomingsofthesimulatedpractice.
