ABSTRACT

ThisthesisdiscussestheapplicationofGrice’sCooperativePrinciple(CP)tothe

interpretingoffuzzinessindiplomaticinterpreting.AccordingtoGrice,whenpeople

uselanguage,theywillconsciouslyorunconsciouslyfollowacertainprinciple,

namelytheCooperativePrinciple.Ininternationaldiplomaticcommunication,thetwo

partiesinaconversationcannotcommunicatedirectlybecauseofthelanguagebarrier

betweenthem,andtheycannotreachcooperationdirectly.Interpreters,asan

intermediary,needtofollowCPandestablishacooperativerelationshipbetweenthe

speakerandthelistenertopromotecommunicationbetweenthem.

Inrecentyears,withthepromotionofChina’smajor-countrydiplomacy,

diplomaticactivitiesheldbyChinahavebecomemoreandmorefrequent.Diplomatic

interpretingisanimportantpartofdiplomaticwork,andthestudyofdiplomatic

interpretingneedstheoreticalsupport.Thepoliticalsensitivityofdiplomaticlanguage

meansthatthespeakersometimescannotmakehisorherstatementstooclearor

absolute,sotheyoftenusefuzzinesstoachievecertaincommunicativeeffects.When

itcomestofuzzinessindiplomaticspeeches,interpretersshouldadoptcertaintactics

toconveythesubtlemeaningoftheoriginalwords.Otherwise,thecommunication

wouldfail.Asanimportantpragmatictheory,CPcouldbeusedtoprovidetheoretical

guidancefortheinterpretingoffuzziness.

ThisthesisexplorestheapplicationofCPtodiplomaticinterpretingbasedonreal

diplomaticinterpretingmaterial.FocusingonGrice’sCooperativePrinciple,this

thesiswillconductaqualitativestudyofthecollectedmaterialtoanalyzethecases

wherethespeaker’suseoffuzzinessobservesorviolatesthefourmaximsofCP.

Finally,theauthorwillgivesomesuggestionsastohowdiplomaticinterpreterscould

makeuseofCPtoreproducetheintendedmeaningoffuzzylanguageindiplomatic

interpreting.
