Theriseofthispowerfulinvestmentbankstartedin1844andplayedapre-

ciousroleinthefinancialandcommercialindustryoftheUnitedStatesfor

morethan15decades.In1844HenryLehmansetupasmalldrygoodsshop

andsoldgroceriestothenearbyfarmers.Sixyearslaterhewasjoinedbyhis;twobrothersandtheynameditLehmanBrothers.Soonafteritsfounding,

theLehmanBrothersevolvedfrommerchandising3businesstocommodities

brokers4thattradedcottontofarmers.Intheyear1898LehmanBrothersun-

derwrote5itsfirstpublicoffering6fortheinternationalsteampumpcompany.

Inthe1900??sthefirmbecameafinancerofmanytopretailers.Intheyear1

906LehmanBrothersshookhandswithGoldmanSachsinordertobringthe

generalcigarcompanytothemarket.Intheyear1929LehmanCorporation

wascreatedwhichwasaclosedendinvestmentcompany.②Intheyear1975;LehmanbrothersacquiredAbrahamCo.andtwoyearslaterin1977

mergedwithKuhn,LoebCo.toformLehmanBrothersKuhnLoebInc.

Lateronin1984AmericanExpressacquiredLehmanBrothersandmergedit

withShearson.Butin1994LehmanBrothersbecameindependentthrough

publicstockofferingsandLehmanBrothersHoldingInc.③In2003Lehman

acquiredNeubergerBermanfor$2.6billionandin2007LehmanBrothers

recordedhighrevenues7andincomeforthefourthconsecutive8yearandthe

highestvolumeoftradeontheLondonStockExchange.
