ABSTRACT

Inrecentyears,theecologicalprotectionhasbecomeurgentpartlyduetothe

increasinglydeterioratingecologicalsituation.Chinapaysgreatattentiontoecological

educationandstressesthattheeducationofecologicalcivilizationneedstobestrengthened.

Languageisawaytointerveneinsocialproblems,andlanguageteachingandlearningalso

hasanindispensableresponsibilityforincreasingstudents’ecologicalprotectionawareness.

InEnglishteachingandlearning,textbooksplayanindispensableroleinecological

education,andthethemeoftextson“ManandNature”reflectstheimportanceof

ecologicaleducation.

Thereisawealthofresearchonecologicaldiscourseanalysis,butlittleattentionhas

beenpaidtoecologicaldiscourseanalysisofmultimodaleducationaltexts.Therefore,

basedonStibbe’s(2015)Ecosophy,thisthesisanalysestheecologicalorientationofthe

clausesandimagesofthemultimodaltextson“ManandNature”inthehighschool

EnglishtextbookspublishedbyPeople’sEducationPress(hereinafterreferredtoasPEP

highschoolEnglishtextbooks)byapplyingthetheoriesoftransitivityandrepresentational

meaning.Thespecificresearchquestionsare:Inthemultimodaltextsonthethemeof

“ManandNature”inPEPhighschoolEnglishtextbooks,1)whatistheecological

orientationoftheprocessesoftransitivity,2)whatistheecologicalorientationofthe

images,and3)Whatistheecologicalorientationconveyedjointlybytheimagesand

verbaltextswithineachunit?

Theresearchfindingsofthispaperareasfollows:1)Theecologicalorientationof

transitivityismainlyreflectedthroughmaterialprocesses.Thematerialprocessesthat

signifybeneficialecologicaldiscourseareprimarilyrealizedthroughtwosyntactic

structures:themiddlevoiceandtheergativevoice.Thematerialprocessesi
