LadiesandGentlemen,

I’dplannedtospeaktoyoutonighttoreportonthestateoftheUnion,buttheevents

ofearliertodayhaveledmetochangethoseplans.Todayisadayformourningand

remembering.NancyandIarepainedtothecorebythetragedyoftheshuttleChallenger.

Weknowwesharethispainwithallofthepeopleofourcountry.Thisistrulyanational

loss.

Nineteenyearsago,almosttotheday,welostthreeastronautsinaterribleaccident

ontheground.But,we’veneverlostanastronautinflight.We’veneverhadatragedy

likethis.Andperhapswe’veforgottenthecourageittookforthecrewoftheshuttle.But

they,theChallengerSeven,wereawareofthedangers,butovercamethemanddidtheir

jobsbrilliantly.Wemournsevenheroes:MichaelSmith,DickScobee,JudithResnik,

RonaldMcNair,EllisonOnizuka,GregoryJarvis,andChristaMcAuliffe.Wemourntheir

lossasanationtogether.

Forthefamiliesoftheseven,wecannotbear,asyoudo,thefullimpactofthis

tragedy.Butwefeeltheloss,andwe’rethinkingaboutyousoverymuch.Yourloved

onesweredaringandbrave,andtheyhadthatspecialgrace,thatspecialspiritthatsays,

“Givemeachallenge,andI’llmeetitwithjoy.”Theyhadahungertoexplorethe

universeanddiscoveritstruths.Theywishedtoserve,andtheydid.Theyservedallof

us.

We’vegrownusedtowondersinthiscentury.It’shardtodazzleus.Butfor

twenty-fiveyearstheUnitedStatesspaceprogramhasbeendoingjustthat.We’vegrown

usedtotheideaofspace,and,perhapsweforgetthatwe’veonlyjustbegun.We’restill

pioneers.They,themembersoftheChallengercrew,werepioneers.
